PAT Test, What is it?

It is a test to check the Electrical Safety of Portable Appliances. This includes a visual inspection to check for damage to the lead or the appliance, this is followed by electrical tests to ensure that the appliance conforms to the health and safety regulations.

There are a number of legal requirements why PAT Testing should be carried out specifically to electrical maintenance. Health & Safety at Work Act 1974, Provision and Use of Work Equipment 1998 and the Electricity at Work Act 1989. The fire brigade strongly recommend PAT Testing is carried out. Some insurance companies will give discount if you can prove that you have had a PAT Test.

All businesses must comply with the above Work Acts.

Can you tell by looking at an appliance if the plug is correctly wired or has the correct fuse in it?

If the Earth is touching the metal case of an appliance (heater, computer or kettle). The appliance will still work but it could be dangerous and you may get an electric shock.

The only way to determine if electrical appliances are safe and fit for the job it is being used for is to have it PAT Tested.

Having your appliances PAT Tested may reduce injury claims and minimise fire risk.

What is a Portable Appliance?

A Portable Appliance is anything that has a plug on it and requires plugging into a mains socket, this includes 110v equipment.
